Canyon Tour

Some guests use Los Vados as a home base for kayaking or rafting on the Colorado River, bicycling or exploring nearby Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Others, once here, find the solitude and privacy of this canyon too compelling to leave.

(To see what's happening in the Moab area, go to www.discovermoab.com/calendar.html.)

The canyon consists mainly of state lands and BLM (federal Bureau of Land Management) land. Our property is in a small (relatively) quadrant of private land surrounded by this public land. So far, the public land is relatively untouched. The only other structures in the canyon are one other home (a mile from us), ranch gates, and a corral. If our guests see other people in the canyon (this is rare), they are usually guests at our neighbor's home or its caretaker. There is no public access through the Los Vados property. Our animal neighbors include a small herd of cattle (17 in all), beavers, chipmunks, lizards, field mice and an occasional coyote. Birds are abundant. In fact, while only 3% of Utah land is alongside a river or stream, 75% of Utah's birds are found in such environments. In the fall of 2005, Los Vados guest Frank Maher observed the following birds in our canyon: Red Tail Hawks, Cooper's Hawk, Turkeys, Rock Wren, Belted Kingfisher, Common Snipe, American Dipper, Raven, Brown Creeper, Downey Woodpecker, Flicker, Bushtit, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Golden Crowned Kinglet, Goldfinch, Dark Eyed Junco, Song Sparrows, Scrub Jay, Says Phoebe.

Los Vados is ten miles from the nearest fire station and completely "off the grid" in terms of utilities. It generates its own electricity through solar panels and has its own well. Conservation is necessary to insure that you have sufficient water and electricity. For this reason, we limit the number of guests staying at the house to four.
